AQA English Language 8700

AQA English Literature 8702

English Language and Literature are taught together with candidates being awarded separate certificates on successful completion of the two year course. All students are eligible and both subjects will be assessed through terminal, untiered and external examinations.

Students will take two exams:

Paper One: Explorations in creative reading and writing (1 hour 45 minutes)

Paper Two: Writers’ viewpoints and perspectives (1 hour 45 minutes)

For both papers, students will have to write analytically and creatively.

There is also a non-examination assessment of Spoken Language where students are required by the exam board to complete a presentation on a topic of their choice. This will be presented in lesson time.

Students will take two exams:

Paper One: Shakespeare and the 19th century novel (Macbeth/A Christmas Carol - 1 hour 45 minutes)

Paper Two: Modern texts and poetry (An Inspector Calls/Power and Conflict poetry - 2 hours 15 minutes)

For both papers, students will have to respond in the form of analytical essays, focusing on the entirety of the text. This is a closed book exam, meaning that students will not have access to a copy of the text during the exam. Therefore it is essential that students have an excellent knowledge of the texts, requiring them to re-read and revise at home.

How can you help?

The most important thing you can do is to encourage your child to read as regularly and widely as possible. They should be reading both fiction and non-fiction texts
